Cuisinart 4 Cup Coffee Maker 580410 Review

We were desperate to replace our worn out coffee pot, and did not have time to look online because I wanted one in my hand right away- I had to go to three stores before I found what I thought I was looking for. We had a 4 cup, black Krups coffee maker, that I had gotten for free through Gevalia for FIFTEEN YEARS!!! Four cups worked fine for us, and the glass carafe is still intact- I am saving it!
I ended up buying this 4 cup from Cuisinart, and the coffee it made was fine BUT I have replaced it while it still is working because I hated it so much!! The 'stainless' steel carafe stains immediately, it is a nice burnt caramel inside. The capacity is stingy, #the glass ones are more generous# the hole in the back that all coffee pots seem to have now, drips as soon as you get near it. We could usually easily take the carafe out,but it fought everytime when putting it back on the element. Black water sometimes appeared underneath for unknown reasons #we replaced it in less than three months!!!# and the element only stays hot for THIRTY MINUTES!! The worst problem is that you can't pour coffee without spilling coffee!! you have to pour over the sink!!
We have replaced it with a beautiful 12 cup programmable coffee maker from Mr Coffee, my daughter wanted it to be programmable but she has only used that function once!! I'd like to be able to unplug it, BUT since it has a digital clockface, unless you want to program it everyday, you need to leave it plugged in, as a vampire. Makes great coffee though, and keeps the element hot for 2 hours!! Very easy to get along with, makes only 4 cups, if that is what you want, very pretty on the counter- we got the one with the red around the top, carafe goes in and out without any problems at all. Hope this one will last 15 years, but who knows. #our stand up freezer is 59 years old- they really don't make things like they used to!!#We bought the BVMC-EJX36 modern design with stainless steel accents, the front has a target look design- Amazon doesn't list that one- this one is the closest.Mr. Coffee FTX49 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Black/Red

Krups XP7225 Compact Fully Automatic Espresso Machine Review

We bought this machine from Williams-Sonoma and liked it so much that we stuck with the coffee through four separate units, each of which failed within three weeks for a different reason.My wife and I each drink 2-3 shots of espresso per day, for a total of 6-8 cycles of the machine (including self rinsing): this is within their warranty rate of 10 cycles per day.We use non-greasy beans and reverse-osmosis water, both of which are recommended by the manufacturer.At first I thought we just got unlucky -- every factory makes a few lemons -- but after four machines and four independent failure modes I'm convinced they're just poorly built.

For coffee : 4-5 stars.When they work, these machines are just adjustable enough for us - you can adjust the grind, the water temperature, and the water volume independently to "sight in" your ideal shot.For reliability: -4 stars.I would give this product just a single star, but the titanium fronted one comes with a terrific milk-frothing assembly that makes great, silky foam every time.That alone is worth a second star.

Machine #1: worked for three weeks, then mysteriously failed with an error code "DE" on the screen.Krups support was baffled.

Machine #2: worked for 1.5 weeks, then the burr grinder broke - motor would turn but wouldn't grind coffee.

Machine #3: DOA - on initial plug-in, entered an infinite loop of "calibrating machine" cycles.(I think an internal sensor was jammed).

Machine #4: worked for 3 weeks, then mysteriously started spewing acrid, electrical-insulator smoke.

I suggest a Delonghi Magnifica - they can be found for under $1k and are actually designed to be maintainable - or a semi-auto with built-in burr grinder (Breville makes one).

Laroma 6-Cup Stainless Steel Stovetop Espresso Coffee Maker Review

I've owned a few stovetop espresso makers over the years, and this is my favorite so far - cool comfortable rubber handles, the stainless steel will not corrode over time like another one I bought (which was beautiful but made of brass and eventually rusted).Looks handsome, works properly, and is easy to clean.Also doesn't use an internal rubber seal like the others I've had, which is great because a rubber seal can become a mess and I had one melt on me.I guess this one is precision-made well enough that it doesn't require one, because it works perfectly with no mess or splattering.

I didn't have the explosion experience that other commenter mentioned - if that happened, very likely you need to poke a pin through the steam escape valve in the bottom canister or run the device with just water to clean it out.If that bottom valve is blocked it'll make a mess of any stovetop maker.You may also just have a faulty item.

Full disclosure: I only paid $20 for this at Macy's (they have some great deals in the basement, especially over the holidays), but I would pay $50 for it.At that price I might start looking at espresso/cappuccino machines instead, but for a stovetop maker this one hits the bulls-eye.
