Sunbeam 6131 Hot Shot Hot Water Dispenser Review

Sunbeam 6131 Hot Shot Hot Water DispenserSunbeam 6131 Hot Shot Hot Water Dispenser, Black

We have used a Hot Shot for many years, replacing the first two because they eventually stopped heating water sufficiently (only up to 160 degrees F).Since they had become a mainstay in our kitchen, used several times a day, we were eager to replace the last one, and ordered the sleek new black model, which is of a somewhat different design than the original.

The first one we received from Amazon leaked considerably if we didn't use up all the water that had been heated, so we sent it back (Amazon paid for the entire return postage and sent us a new one at no extra cost). The second one leaked just like the first one, through the dispenser spout, when water was left to sit in the heating chamber. We never had this problem with the older model.

I am giving it two stars instead of only one, since some people may not mind being sure to empty the heating chamber after each use.(If it didn't leak, I would give it 4 stars -- and 5 stars, if it were also tall enough to accomodate taller cups).

Travel Immersion Heater CH-106 Review

Travel Immersion Heater CH-106I ordered this product, and it was defective. The company sent me a replacement. The replacement worked for about five uses, then it quit working.I decided to dissect it rather than try again.

Sure enough, it contains a heating element wire inside the metal casing that is about the thickness of a strand of sewing thread. Too fragile. No wonder it failed after such a short time.

Graniteware 3 Quart Coffee Boiler Review

Graniteware 3 Quart Coffee BoilerI'm not a coffee drinker, but I do enjoy my hot cocoa when I'm camping, and I'm a stickler when it comes to cleaning the pots and pans, both of which require really hot water. This pot, with it's generous 3 quart capacity has proven itself to be an invaluable part of my camp kitchen.Camping is a bit of a compromise in most areas, but it's comforting to have a ready supply of hot water for drinks and cleaning.I'm glad I bought this, and at about $20 is the best deal I've been able to find for this kind of item.I highly recommend it.

Note however, this isn't a percolator with the internal basket and tube. It's a pot only.

Timolino 17-Ounce Travette Coffee and Tea Maker Review

Timolino 17-Ounce Travette Coffee and Tea MakerI'm so glad to have found this personal kettle that I'll probably purchase another for the office or keep in my car, or maybe even give some away as gifts. There is nothing like it on the market from Bodum or any of the other name manufacturers. It's totally easy to make great tea through the infuser component (no more filters and strange, messy contraptions). The infuser is large enough so that the tea has room to expand.

And everything comes apart easily for cleaning and is quite unlikely to break. The kettle has a nice weight and non-skid bottom, easy to pour handle, the size is about a half-liter (1.5 hefty U.S. mugs full) -- and it keeps tea hot for hours. There is no leaking during pouring, unless the gasket comes off when cleaning and hasn't been put back in place correctly.I can't say enough good things about this product that all loose tea lovers should have and keep for many years.

About Timolino, as some other customers have noticed, their shipping is not terribly fast, I guess unless you're on the west coast. So don't wait too long to order, if you're in a hurry. But the product arrived well packed. The box was acceptable for gift giving. For the price, the Travette and company definitely deserve 5 stars plus: *****+.

Someone heard what tea drinkers really need and actually manufactured it!

Hamilton Beach 42115 3-in-1 Hot-Beverage Center, Black Review

Hamilton Beach 42115 3-in-1 Hot-Beverage Center, BlackThis is replacing a 4 cup Melitta coffeemaker (couldn't find a replacement carafe that would fit the brewer, which sat atop the pot).
This appealed to me in that this product has the following good features:

1) no pot/carafe to crack or clean
2) no waste (since you didn't have to brew 1-3 cups to get 1 decent sized mug + waste)
3) no hot plate/pot to turn off - nothing to worry about if you started a brew and then were unexpectedly called away or forgot about it
4) no paper filters required (but see below)
5) looks interesting - doesn't look like a coffee maker, takes up less space on counter, easier to keep clean.

I read some reviews - good and bad- and decided to get it anyway. AM SO GLAD I DID- I REALLY LIKE THIS THING!

Reasons:1)-4) above, plus:
5) water resevoir + filter assembly is dishwasher safe (top rack)
6) capability of using pods (I wasn't about to buy an expensive 'pod-processor', so this is a very nice 'perk' - pun intended! ;o)

Very easy- load it up, walk away, come back to beverage.Lovely!

Some tips to head off any/all problems-

1) Read the manual.Hey, things happen, but really - use COLD WATER ONLY.

2) If brewing multiple cups- WAIT AT LEAST 30 SECS after light goes off before starting another brew.To be safe, I wait a full minute- have not had any problems.

3) I could see the potential for 'filter fouling', so I buy generic #4 Melitta filters (huge pack can be bought for <$2/pk) (& since #1s are almost impossible to find/expensive).I cut them down to fit the little filter basket, and I can go back n forth from tea to coffee to hot cocoa to soup without carryover effects (dump out coffee & rinse assembly after coffee).
4) Be careful with pushing down on plastic parts- again- read the manual. You might have to double-check to be sure that the water resevoir is pushed in all the way some times (it happened to me once).Use the handle/flap assembly to open/close the filter assembly - this is covered in the manual.

I agree- it would be nice if this were made more robustly (less plastic), and I do worry about the ability to get a replacement brew basket if need be. But I paid less than $20 for this (at Meijer), so can't complain.
