Dreamfarm Charcoal Black Grindenstein Review

It's just what we needed. After a major bill to a plumber who told us that coffee grounds collect like sand and clog pipes, we decided that $30 for a knock box was money well invested.

As many have said, the box is too small for commercial use but it's perfect for home and it even fits under the pour spout on the espresso machine for storage. The rubber feet and squat design hold it steady on the counter. The bar is wide, sturdy and rubber coated so it's not likely to dent your filter unit. And the low cut front edge insures that you don't accidentally hit the handle or your finger on the edge.

I think $30 is too high of a mark-up, but nothing cheaper looked nearly as functional. If ours was stolen by a coffe loving burglar (I don't expect it will break) I would buy another immediately.

Bodum New Kenya 34-Ounce Tea Press, Black Review

I purchased the Bodum New Kenya tea presses in both the small and the medium sized models. I really enjoy good quality loose tea, and the tea presses make it very convenient to brew this way (although the tea presses do also accommodate bagged tea, according to the instructions). For the small press I add about one and one half tablespoons of loose tea to the strainer, and about three tablespoons for the medium sized press. The amount you add, as always, will depend on your own preferences.

I would have given the New Kenya presses 5 stars, but for one feature that I believe has the potential for eventual failure, due to extended use. The plunger portion of the tea press is surrounded by a soft plastic gasket, to seal it closely to the basket when pressing the tea leaves. Because this gasket is made of such a soft material, I can see that it has the potential to wear out over time, much in the same way that other gaskets can become worn.

It doesn't appear that this gasket comes off or separates from the plunger, so I imagine that if it does wear out, the entire lid and plunger assembly will have to be replaced. Potentially, that could be costly, but with the reduced price that Amazon currently offers these models, it might be a moot point.The New Kenya models are the first Bodum tea presses I have purchased, so I do not know if all of the Bodum models have this same type of plunger assembly.

Perhaps I am being overly cautious, but I depend on the reviews of others many times when making purchases, so I want to be as honest as possible. (You can decide whether or not my concern is important to you!)

The most significant points are that this press is simple to use, allows you to control the strength of your brewed tea, and is also very easy to clean. Oh, yeah, and did I mention that it makes one heck of a great cup of tea!? Cheers!

BonJour 8 Cup Fiore French Press, Double Wall Stainless Steel Review

I purchased a Bonjour french Press and my screen came off so the manufacturing company (Meyer) replaced the entire press with this Bonjour Fiore. Pros: The entire press and carafe is stainless steel; insulated with double stainless steel which keeps your beverage hot for hours; has a triple filter system and the push press is tighter than most so there are no grinds or tea leaves spilling through to your cup. Modern design, easy to clean and good company reputation. Cons: The spout is so petite that your beverage must be poured slowly or it will end up on your counter tops. This defect is a small price to pay for such a well made french press that will last for many years.

Ingeni Coffee & Tea Maker Review

I absolutely love this brewer for my daily tea and I now go out of my way to seek out loose whole tea, which is so much better than the powder you find with most tea bags.Yes you can use tea bags, but you will finish them up and be like me and seek out the flavor of loose tea.

Holds enough water (13 oz or more) for a large mug or a couple cups.Just put in tea, hot water, steep for 3-5 minutes and then set it on your mug or cup and it instantly flows out the bottom (passing through tea settled in the bottom). Lift up when cup/mug is full.

I plan to get another one in the future for my coffee, as soon as I break my fragile glass French Press.The Ingeni is heavy duty plastic.

Bodum Biasca 40-Ounce Glass Iced Tea Maker Review

Had previously owned the Bodum Ceylon 51oz Iced Tea Pitcher, but the "infuser" was useless from the start and the lid broke after a few uses... so I was excited to see the Biasca Ice Tea Jug as an updated ice tea solution.

First off - please note that this is a COLD BREW iced tea maker which requires 5-6 hours of cold steeping in the fridge.This also means that hot water should never be used.The idea behind a cold brew is to cut down the bitterness or astringency of regular brew iced tea, and also to enhance the more subtle flavors of whichever leaf you're using.

This process and jug produces a very soft, light and delicate iced tea.If you're looking for brisk - keep looking.Even adding heaps of extra tea does not go far in strengthening a cold brew.

Regarding the Biasca, I LOVE the design - my version had a bright green lid and looked fun and modern.The overall size of the jug is also appreciated as it has a small diameter and a comfortable, slim handle.Plus the lid is fantastic - a good rubber seal and a fine mesh that keeps all leaves in the jug and out of your mug.Wonderful!

I wish I could continue enjoying that wonderful design, however, on only my second use, I set a full jug back in the fridge and the bottom two inches of the jug broke off and sent glass and thousands of tiny tea leaves all over my fridge and kitchen floor.

Be warned - this item is extremely fragile!I did not bang or slam the jug against anything, not did I use hot water - and yet it still broke.I'm sure you'll have better luck than I if you understand this going in.Treat it with kid gloves and I'm sure it will be a great iced tea maker for you!

But for me, being that this is the second Bodum tea product that has broken within a few uses, I think I'm calling it a day with their iced tea goods.

As a side note - I'm still a fan of Bodum products. I own many Bodum glasses and a glass teapot and have not had any issues with those even after a few years of use.Just something about their iced tea items....

Mr. Coffee TM3-2 3-Quart Ice Tea Maker Review

EDIT (11/18/2006):I just wanted to add that Mr. Coffee sent me a free replacement pitcher after I emailed them about this problem.If this pitcher also cracks, I'll update this review.

EDIT (11/01/2006):It's now been exactly seven months from my original review and now I'm sad to say that I was wrong.Even though there didn't seem to be any difference between the materials and workmanship of our new TM3 and our old TM3, the new pitcher has just cracked.I've uploaded a picture to Amazon so you can see what I'm talking about.At first, I thought it was just a seam in the pitcher that I hadn't noticed before.But, after making a batch of iced tea, I had a small puddle on the countertop (which is a new thing).Since the crack is right in the pour spout (which is how the hot tea enters the pitcher from the brewing area), some of the freshly brewed tea seeps through the crack instead of falling into the pitcher.A sad day.I'll be contacting Mr. Coffee to see what they have to say.

Original Review (04/01/2006):We've use a Mr. Coffee TM3 (TM3.5 from what I can make out on the bottom of the unit) Iced Tea Maker for YEARS (at least 5, but more like 7) without trouble.Finally, after all that time of constant, daily use, the pitcher started developing some minor cracks.So, we replaced the whole thing.Outside of some minor differences in the plug, this version is identical to our old version (the bottom plate still says TM3.5).It's interesting that the recurring motif in all these reviews is that the pitcher cracks.When we first got our old unit, we too had that problem.After looking at how we were using the thing, we figured out that the cracking was because of how we added ice to the pitcher:while holding the pitcher's handle, we just shoved the other end of the pitcher under the ice maker.The problem was that we were using the pitcher itself to apply the pressure needed to trigger the ice maker.We bought a new pitcher and used our hand to trigger the ice maker, not the pitcher.That pitcher lasted us all those years.

Because of the prevalance of the "cracking pitcher" reviews, I'll keep an eye on this and see if anything is different.But, since everything looks identical to our old unit (down to the feel and heft of the materials), I don't anticipate problems.Based on all those years of happy use of the identical model, I rate this at an Excellent 5 stars out of 5:I couldn't live without it.

Cuisinart PRC-12 Classic 12-Cup Stainless-Steel Percolator Review

I do not understand what has happened in the coffee maker industry.It seems as if every coffee appliance I buy fails.This one is no exception.I bought this one only because most of the reviews praised it.Now I am sure that the reviews are phony and must be posted by the manufacturer.There is no control over the time of percolation which for whatever reason has been designed to be too short.The coffee comes out weak especially if you try to make less than 12 cups, the water just doesn't make it through the strainer for less cups???The manual suggests using 20 spoons for 12 cups of strong coffee.At this rate I will essentially be using double the coffee grinds to make the same amount of coffee as I did with a much older Faberware I had and the coffee is still weak.The new faberwares are just as bad as everything else manufactured these days.The reviews and the item description also touts that this coffee percolator has a glass knob.This is an outright lie, it is plastic!!!!I was initially pleased with the design although I feel it is made with a lighter guage metal than it should be.I would gladly pay double for this product if it worked.Don't buy it, it is another coffee maker dud!!!!!

Bodum 16-Ounce Travel Coffee Press and Tea Maker, Clear Review

I've owned this mug for a couple of years and used it primarily for camping. Dan from Rochester got it right with his commentary, so I'll add just a few points.

The concept is ideal for camping and reduces the effort to make really good coffee. However, the bad points regarding the plunger not going down far enough; leaking lid; etc. are all right on.Also, the cup is double-wall plastic for insulation. The inside sleeve on mine cracked when I poured boiling hot water in it!

I would certainly purchase a similar item again, though not this one. Bodum just needs to increase the quality.I would pay twice the price for higher quality.

Overall...not recommended.

Hamilton Beach 42115 3-in-1 Hot-Beverage Center, Black Review

This is replacing a 4 cup Melitta coffeemaker (couldn't find a replacement carafe that would fit the brewer, which sat atop the pot).
This appealed to me in that this product has the following good features:

1) no pot/carafe to crack or clean
2) no waste (since you didn't have to brew 1-3 cups to get 1 decent sized mug + waste)
3) no hot plate/pot to turn off - nothing to worry about if you started a brew and then were unexpectedly called away or forgot about it
4) no paper filters required (but see below)
5) looks interesting - doesn't look like a coffee maker, takes up less space on counter, easier to keep clean.

I read some reviews - good and bad- and decided to get it anyway. AM SO GLAD I DID- I REALLY LIKE THIS THING!

Reasons:1)-4) above, plus:
5) water resevoir + filter assembly is dishwasher safe (top rack)
6) capability of using pods (I wasn't about to buy an expensive 'pod-processor', so this is a very nice 'perk' - pun intended! ;o)

Very easy- load it up, walk away, come back to beverage.Lovely!

Some tips to head off any/all problems-

1) Read the manual.Hey, things happen, but really - use COLD WATER ONLY.

2) If brewing multiple cups- WAIT AT LEAST 30 SECS after light goes off before starting another brew.To be safe, I wait a full minute- have not had any problems.

3) I could see the potential for 'filter fouling', so I buy generic #4 Melitta filters (huge pack can be bought for <$2/pk) (& since #1s are almost impossible to find/expensive).I cut them down to fit the little filter basket, and I can go back n forth from tea to coffee to hot cocoa to soup without carryover effects (dump out coffee & rinse assembly after coffee).
4) Be careful with pushing down on plastic parts- again- read the manual. You might have to double-check to be sure that the water resevoir is pushed in all the way some times (it happened to me once).Use the handle/flap assembly to open/close the filter assembly - this is covered in the manual.

I agree- it would be nice if this were made more robustly (less plastic), and I do worry about the ability to get a replacement brew basket if need be. But I paid less than $20 for this (at Meijer), so can't complain.

Mr. Coffee TM1 2-Quart Iced Tea Maker Review

I had the old one with the orange top.That one has a top basket to hold the tea bags which incorporates a side lever to plug the bottom drain hole, and an overflow channel so just the last couple of cups steep the tea until you pull the lever to release them. The new one with the blue basket has done away with that lever (I'm guessing to cut costs) and just put a little bit smaller hole at the bottom.They also tell you to use a coffee filter in the basket in addition to the teabags themselves, which after all are little paper filters.This is probably to slow down the run-out of the tea to help it steep it a little bit longer.My favorite combination of bags is one bag or Celestial Seasons Red Zinger, one Lipton Mango, and two Red Rose decaf's.In the old one I would let this combination of tea steep for maybe 10 minutes, and it came out perfectly.Using the same bags with the new one makes *really* tasteless, watery tea.

I just found a new model that makes 3 quarts and has a dial on the front for what they call "brew strength".This is a decided advantage over the other revised model.Also, you get a quart more of tea per cycle.You pour the water directly into the unit, where there is a window on the front with markings for 1, 2 and 3 quarts.The container has markings for how much ice to use for 1, 2 and 3 quarts.This is a better design, IMHO.Also, the pitchers are shorter, so fit in more places in your fridge, and the handles don't attach at the pitcher bottom, so you can nest them for storage.This is a big advantage over the old style.The new one comes with 2 pitchers.You can turn them both upside-down over the base unit to save even more storage space.

My recomendation: don't buy the newer 2 quart blue basket model.Hold out for the 3 quart model.And here's the kicker- I found mine at Wal-Mart for $2.00 less than Target was selling the 2 quart model!

Once you get into the habit of drinking iced tea instead of soda, you'll never go back.The savings in calories, money and hassle of returnable bottles and cans will have you hooked.

Mr. Coffee Iced Tea Maker - TM1S Review

My husband drinks Iced Tea ALL THE TIME and I have this on-again-off-again addiction to Snapple. We use this Iced Tea Maker at least 2-3 times per day and it works great.

A few things we have had to watch out for:

1. Making sure the "drain plug switch" on the basket is down so the water doesn't just run through the basket without seeping in the tea bags.

2. Making sure that the pitcher is set correctly against the Ice Tea maker so it doesn't leak

3. Making sure the flip lid where you pour the water into the pot is left up after using so that it doesn't condense and mildew on the inside.

Other than that, it is fool proof -- if I can use it being as domestically challenged as I am, I am the fool that proves this! You don't even have to use ice to make iced tea -- instead of filling with ice, just use water up to the first (lower) water line. We do this at night because we know that the tea will be in the fridge over night and have a chance to cool completely.

I have recently discovered Looza Peach, 33.8-Ounce (Pack of 6)and love to add this as a close and cheap approximation to my Snapple habit -- less calories, less caffeine, less money, better taste...

This is probably our 4th generation of the product and they do make slight redesigns each time around so if you are getting a new one, make sure you "take inventory" to figure out what they have changed on you.
