Breville BES400XL Ikon 15-Bar-Pump Espresso Machine Review

We've owned 3 or 4 different espresso makers over the years, paying big bucks for some.This was the first that delivered for us day in and day out... at least at first.It lasted a lot longer than most until it failed about 14 months after buying it.We have replaced it with the Le Cube Nespresso 180 espresso maker (see our other review there)

Pro:
+ Consistent brew with a great flavor
+ Creates a good (but not best) coffee crema, unlike many other brands
+ A good solid feel to it, does not feel cheap or flimsy to us
+ Overflow tray is huge (and much appreciated I might add)
+ Comes with a stainless frothing cup and scoop for coffee (the other end of the scoop doubles as a coffee tamper too)
+ Seems to handle/tolerate a variety of grinds, fine and course, something other brands seemed to hate
+ Very easy to see remaining water/water level at a glance, thank you!
+ For those who put their appliances away instead of leaving them on the counter: the power plug has a thumb-sized hole in it to more easily (and more safely) pull the plug.I've never seen this feature before.
+ Overflow tray that sits under your cup has a novel "full" indicator/float that pops up when the tray is full and needs to be emptied
+ Comes with espresso cups

Con:
- The clear water container a little awkward with the frothing wand and/or when the coffee holder is inserted in the machine.We find that these items are in the way and need to be moved to slide the water container out of the unit.Probably a picky comment that should not detract from your impression of this gem.
- Water container also has some awkward angles, complicating cleaning.
- Overflow tray "full" indicator noted in the "pro" section above only warns you when the tray is absolutely full with no margin for error, making for an interesting and exciting trip to the sink
- Lasted longer than other models, but ultimately failed shortly after the warranty ended

Neutral:
x Priming/heat-up process, while fast, was very different from our other models.Not an issue, but you need to get used to it.

Bottom line: no longer recommended due to low quality of internal mechanism(s).

Dreamfarm Charcoal Black Grindenstein Review

It's just what we needed. After a major bill to a plumber who told us that coffee grounds collect like sand and clog pipes, we decided that $30 for a knock box was money well invested.

As many have said, the box is too small for commercial use but it's perfect for home and it even fits under the pour spout on the espresso machine for storage. The rubber feet and squat design hold it steady on the counter. The bar is wide, sturdy and rubber coated so it's not likely to dent your filter unit. And the low cut front edge insures that you don't accidentally hit the handle or your finger on the edge.

I think $30 is too high of a mark-up, but nothing cheaper looked nearly as functional. If ours was stolen by a coffe loving burglar (I don't expect it will break) I would buy another immediately.

Timolino 16 oz. Aromatic Australian Press, black Review

This little unit is great. I cannot vouch for its coffee-making abilities, but it is excellent for making a cup of tea. The mesh filter is finer than the mesh used in most tea infuser balls, so that cup of African rooibos won't have bits of leaf floating around in it. It also brews a more flavorful cup of tea because the tea is free to float around in the liquid, unlike tea made with an infuser ball. It holds enough liquid to make one large mug of coffee or tea. It's quite durable too, as long as you don't use it as a football. The unit also fully disassembles for cleaning (hint: to remove the filter, just push the post on the middle of the filter assembly to the side, just make sure you don't lose the ball bearing - it's the part that stops the flow of liquid when you lift the unit off your mug.)

The only caveat is that if your favorite mug has a diameter greater than the average coffee mug, you'll have to dispense the liquid a little differently. Just rest one of the plastic tabs on the bottom of the unit against the outside of your mug's rim, and dispense the liquid.

Highly recommended.

iittala Taika 6-Inch Saucer, Red Review

I ordered two red plates with a peacock on the plate as shown on line. I was sent red plates with an owl on them. I called Amazon and spoke with a person who said it had showen I had indeed ordered two red plates with a peacock on them NOT OWLS. I stayed on line a long time and the man told me the item number did not match the product. I told him I would be sending the wrong red plates back and to cancel the order. I ordered the red plates with the peacock from someone else. I continued to receive red plates from Amazon with the owl. NO ONE had my permission to send me these plates after Amazon's mistake and my cancellation of these plates. I had to keep sending these packages back to a very busy postal office at Christmas. I did not appreciate this and was not happy with any part of this transaction. If Amazon did not have the peacock, they should have never sent an owl. Later the graphic was changed from a peacock to an owl and the two wonderful people I talked to at Amazon said they could see that.

Bunn Nhb Professional Home Brewer Review

We love this coffee maker. Over the years we've used a lot of coffee brewers (some very expensive and fancy) -we love our coffee strong and flavorful. We've had several Bunn products over the years and recognize the quality. This model, while simple and basic, is superior to a Cuisinart that we were using. (It was the model with the thermal carafe, programmable). We weren't satisfied with the taste of the coffee considering that we buy good fresh beans and grind each day. When I purchased this model Bunn I didn't know how we'd manage in the early a.m. without the programmable feature...but this is SO FAST. You just pour the water in the top and swing the cover over and within minutes you have a hot flavorful pot of coffee...and that's important if it's 5:00 am and you're in pj's and bare feet waiting for that java boost!(I bought another just in case this one ever gives out...and they don't make the model anymore!!)

Proctor Silex 44301 BrewStation 10-Cup Dispensing Coffeemaker Review

What I love about this brewstation is that everything that could get dirty and over time, unsightly, is readily washable. With a coffee maker the hot plate usually wears away, and the coffee stains, no matter how diligent you are, don't come clean. Only a few parts of a coffeemaker can be cleaned thoroughly. However, with the brewstation the coffee tank lifts off and can be washed at will, as can the filter and the drip tray. Cosmetically speaking this is really great. My husband is having a hard time getting used to this because he misses the carafe. He also finds it big. Well, our old coffeemaker was for 5 cups and this is for 10, so of course it's bigger. I on the other hand love this precisely because there IS no carafe. No breaking, no replacing, no cleaning. The size is fine and the machine is compact. As to the coffee it makes: We haven't yet made a perfect cup of coffee, which isn't the machine's fault, but ours. We bought a grinder along with the brewstation and so we're using two new products at the same time. I can tell you that the coffee is quickly made, stays hot and not bitter. With a couple of more attempts I think we'll master a really, really good cup of coffee. I do have one quibble with this machine. I think the water level indicator should be on the water reservoir and not in the front. However, this is just my preference and why it got 4 stars and not 5.Overall, a really terrific product.

UPDATE 3/17/06Well, my husband has gotten over the "I miss the carafe, and this is too big" situation. I adore this coffeemaker
and we have made and continue to make truly excellent coffee. We like coffee strong without being bitter and I have found that for 10 cups I use 10-11 full scoops of coffee. All the visible parts are pristine. The basket is clean, although the inside reservoir is stained. It's time for a cleaning. All in all we're both very happy with this and certainly recommend it highly.

Briel Lido Pump Espresso Machine Review

I've owned the Briel Lido for about two years now and I can say that it's the a phenomenal espresso machine for the price. You can't purchase another effective pump-centric machine for any less than this. It is capable of reliably producing fine espresso with beautiful crema and frothed milk to match -- with a few caveats...

Caveat 1: You'll need to buy an aftermarket non-pressurized portafilter. The pressurized portafilter that it comes with is how it "guarantees" crema -- even with stale beans. It may work for a while, but I found that in order for it to produce consistent results over time, it needs constant maintenance (cleaning) and adjusting (via the tightening screw at the bottom to regulate pre-release pressure). A non-pressurized aftermarket portafilter means you'll have to properly grind (or purchase properly ground) coffee and learn how to tamp the coffee with the right amount of pressure so you can consistently produce a good pull. Forget purchasing a fancy tamper unless you just like to "look" professional. The plastic disc with handle that it comes with does fine as a tamper... like anything else, you just need to put in the time to learn it.

Caveat 2: Pull all your espresso shots for as many drinks as you're serving BEFORE you froth your milk. Since this machine uses one heater element to both produce pressurized water for espresso pulling and dry-steam for milk frothing, you won't be able to pull a decent espresso shot without drawing a burnt taste after frothing milk... at least not until the machine cools down sufficiently, which can take quite some time.

Caveat 3: You must clean the machine regularly if you don't do an empty "cleaning" pull after you're done pulling your espresso shots. Residual oils from the coffee will build up and turn rancid contaminating your espresso over time. You'll notice this rancidness in your espresso shots when you're into the 2nd month, if you do absolutely no maintenance and/or cleaning. Don't blame it on the beans or the water as it's more than likely that you're machine just needs cleaning.

Two years into owning this thing and it still cranks out great espresso. What's happened since I bought the machine? The silkscreen on the top is now a bit worn, especially around the steam knob/lever. The steam knob/lever control has progressively slipped over time. It functions just fine, but is now off the original graphic marks that is on the machine.

That's it. It's a great machine, still pulling great espresso and rich, frothy milk for me. If you can't deal with all the work involved in pulling a good espresso shot with this machine, I'd suggest you try one of the semi-automatics or automatics up the range... say maybe one of the Saeco's, Gaggia's, or La Pavoni's. If you're willing to work within the tools provided by this machine and you purchase quality espresso-oriented coffee blends, it's guaranteed to be able to provide superb espresso and espresso-based drinks -- substantially better than any major chain and on-par with any professional barrista-led cafe.
